New England

Farming was difficult in New England because of:

• rocky soil

• thick forests

• long winters

* Fishing and trade became major industries in New England.

A growing fishing industry in New England caused:

• an increase in shipbuilding

• an increase in lumbering

• an increase in barrel making

• an increase in sailmaking

• an increase in metal working (blacksmith)

In order to learn these skills, people became apprentices.
