The Redcoats Leave Boston

• Gen. Washington had the cannons taken from Fort Ticonderoga placed on Dorchester Heights, overlooking Boston and its harbor.

• British General Howe gave up the city of Boston, leaving with his troops for Halifax, Canada.

* However, King George III ordered a blockade of all colonial ports.

* Also, Hessian troops from Germany were hired to help fight the colonists.


Common Sense (1776)

- Common Sense was a pamphlet written by Thomas Paine that helped convince thousands of colonists to support independence from Great Britain.


Signing of the Declaration

- In June of 1776, the Continental Congress agreed that a Declaration of Independence needed to be written.

- On July 4, 1776, the delegates accepted the Declaration of Independence, written by Thomas Jefferson.
