Battle of Long Island
June 1776
- British General William Howe defeated the Americans.
- Over 1,400 Americans were killed, wounded or captured.
- George Washington escaped unharmed.
- Nathan Hale was an American spy captured by the British.
- Hale was tried for treason and sentenced to death.
- Quote: "I only regret that I have but one life to lose for my country."
Battles of Trenton and Princeton
- On Christmas night, 1776, Gen. Washington led his troops across the Delaware River in New Jersey.
- The next day, on December 26, the Americans captured over 1,400 Hessians in Trenton. (Hessians - German soldiers hired by the British)
- As the Americans retreated from Trenton, they defeated the British in Princeton.
