Although several students in each class will be assigned the same decade, each student will be completing their own work. I anticipate reserving a computer lab for one week in order for my students to gather the data necessary for the completion of the assignment. I will then allow an additional week for students to complete the written work and artwork at home. During this two week period I will make myself available several times per week before and after school during extra help in order to help those students that are having difficulty.

This will be a single disciplinary assignment. However, I will encourage my students to avail themselves of the resources available in the library and to discuss the project with their art teachers for advice and/or suggestions.

The Process

1. Each student will be randomly assigned a decade between the 1920's and the 1990's.

2. Use the websites provided to learn about the cultural contributions made to America during your assigned decade. (cultural contributions may include the following: art, architecture, film, music, television, radio, sports, fashion, fads, theatre, and books/literature)

3. Identify how the examples reflected the time period being studied.

4. Identify how the time period influenced the work and/or lives of the artists.

5. Analyze your findings and create an article for the Lawrence Times explaining what you have learned about the cultural contributions your assigned decade had on America.

5. Replicate a chosen piece of art originally created during your assigned decade.
